Welcoming the autumn

Cooler crisper days. Longer nights. A time to read and a time to write.

I can’t say I’m sorry to see autumn looming. With autumn evenings on the horizon we’re moving into the weirder part of the year, and it seems no coincidence that Halloween is this season’s big event.

I set the Fey Flame at the tail end of Autumn as it seems the most believable time for a tear between our world and something very different.

Because of this my writing feels most at home right now. I can’t wait to grab a warm mug of tea and my old beaten-up netbook and make the most of it.

Is there a time of year (or a time of day even) when you feel most productive? Are you mourning the loss of summer or are you happy to see the nights draw in?

As always thanks for reading, all the best, John

Exactly the same here. I joined camp NaNoWriMo last June and it almost broke me. It was shockingly difficult to get the work done. It always feels like external expectations are at their highest during summer. Have you found a way of ensuring you keep working during summer?

I write monthly features for a book review blog, so that forces me to at least write something every so often. However, I haven’t really found a great way to motivate myself seriously when it comes to my own writing.

While Autumn is the most beautiful time of year, I can’t help but to feel a haunting, spooky feeling that lingers throughout the season. Must be true when they say that the veil between our world and beyond is at it’s thinnest during the Fall time 😉

I think the haunting quality is probably at the heart of what I like about it. There’s something sorrowful yet comforting about it that makes it easier to tap in to a whole range of human emotions. I definitely find it easiest to connect to my characters during autumn/fall 🙂
